Honouring BC Workers who lost their lives to workplace injury and disease

Join us and thousands of Canadians on April 28 as we gather to remember the lives of those who have been injured or lost their lives due to workplace accidents or disease.
Canada has recognized this National Day of Mourning since the government passed the act in 1991. There are many local ceremonies in communities across Canada and the Canadian flag on Parliament Hill is flown at half-mast. Workers and employees observe the day in various ways including wearing ribbons, lighting candles, and observing moments of silence.
Since 1997, the BC Federation of Labour, the Business Council of British Columbia, and WorkSafeBC have co-hosted a public commemorative ceremony for the Day of Mourning in Vancouver, B.C. A workers memorial was dedicated to those lost in 2001 in the Sanctuary in Hastings Park, Vancouver.
According to the Canadian Labour Council, approximately 1,000 Canadians are killed each year as a result of workplace injuries, accidents, and illnesses. Its a number both alarming and disturbing.
Worksafe BC encourages us to take this time to talk to each other about workplace safety and renew our commitment to caring for each other and making sure we all get home safe at the end of the day. If you see hazards in the workplace, please say something to your supervisor and encourage a culture where health and safety is a priority.
