The groundwork for this project includes bulk excavation to dig out space for an underground parkade. Activity onsite is blasting and drilling in addition to a daily fleet of trucks removing earth, clay and rock.
In the beginning
Here is a look at the site from when we first broke ground. There was a lot of work to do to clear the area of brush!
Removal
There was an enormous amount of earth to remove at this site! It certainly kept our excavators busy for several months!
Going Down
Finally getting down to the bedrock and clay! Here is our 480 excavator loading out earth into a parade of trucks.
Blue Clay
You can see we made it down to bedrock, and we also found blue clay. It certainly was a large deposit!
Time to drill
We reached the bedrock, but we still had a long way down to dig. So we started drilling as we prepped to blast out the rock!
Boom!
In order to remove the bedrock, we have to drill down into the rock, insert dynamite and blast it into pieces. Of course, there are many regulations and we must be careful to follow all safety rules, but it is fun to watch!
Breaking and Sorting
After we blast there's a lot of rocks in many sizes that have to be broken down into a specific grade in order to continue removal from the site.
Securing the excavation
When we have dug down to the correct level we secure the side of the dig with anchors that go into the bedrock and spray the sides with shotcrete.
Burnside Update
Here's where we are as of May 2023! It certainly looks a lot different.
